Puerto Rico Through My Lens: Two Layovers, Two Different Experiences

Layover Lens | San Juan & Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

Two layovers. Two different experiences. One unforgettable island.

There's something special about Puerto Rico. The beautiful beaches, warm tropical weather, delicious food, and vibrant culture make it a destination worth experiencing—even when you only have a few hours.

During the summer of 2026, I had the opportunity to visit Puerto Rico on two separate flight attendant layovers. One was a peaceful solo adventure in San Juan, while the other became an unforgettable experience with an amazing crew in Aguadilla.

San Juan: 12 Hours of Sunshine and Solitude

My first stop was San Juan, where I had a 12-hour layover and decided to spend some quality time with myself.

With palm trees swaying and the ocean calling, I made my way to the beach. There was no elaborate itinerary or sightseeing checklist. I simply wanted to enjoy the sunshine, dip my feet in the water, and appreciate the beauty around me.

Along the way, I spotted roosters wandering freely and noticed something rather concerning—several pigeons appeared to be missing parts of their feet! I couldn't help wondering what had happened to them.

After enjoying the beach, I walked across the street for fresh fish ceviche, taking a moment to appreciate the simple pleasures of traveling alone.

I eventually returned to my hotel, squeezed in a workout, and prepared for my flight back to base.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the simplest ones.

Aguadilla: Good Food, Great Company, and Unforgettable Memories

My second Puerto Rico layover brought me to Aguadilla, and this time, the experience was completely different.

I was fortunate to be paired with one of the best flight crews I've had the pleasure of spending a layover with. The chemistry was effortless, the laughter was constant, and everyone brought such positive energy.

We spent time relaxing poolside, enjoying virgin margaritas, and soaking up the beautiful tropical atmosphere.

Later, we visited CINCO Restaurant, where I was craving one of Puerto Rico's signature dishes—mofongo. My crewmates enjoyed steak and shrimp, while I decided to try a Sidecar cocktail.

Let's just say one sip was more than enough! It was much stronger than I expected, especially since I no longer drink alcohol regularly. I couldn't finish it, but it certainly gave us something to laugh about.

Beyond the food and beautiful scenery, what made Aguadilla memorable was the company. Sometimes, the people you travel with make the experience just as special as the destination itself.

One Island, Two Beautiful Experiences

San Juan reminded me of the beauty of spending time alone—slowing down, enjoying nature, and appreciating the present moment.

Aguadilla reminded me how meaningful shared experiences can be, especially when you're surrounded by wonderful people.

Both layovers were different, but each gave me another reason to love Puerto Rico.

And before I knew it, it was time to pack up, return to the airport, and get back in the air.

That's the beauty of Layover Lens: discovering new places, collecting stories, and finding memorable experiences along the way.
